Psycho-Education

Consultations

25 minute conversations

$ 90

Not therapy, but an opportunity to ask questions about mental health. Questions could be with someone close to you in mind or for your own education.

Questions might be about human personality, patterns, or change. About how thoughts, feelings and behaviors intertwine and can produce symptoms. Your questions might be about why good psychotherapy works, differences between the professions that offer therapy and how to help someone find a therapist.

Psycho-Ed Consultations are not treatment, thus are

available to people in any location. I'm willing to consult with people in any time zone worldwide. (Unfortunately, I'm only fluent in English, though.)

I am happy to work with clients who are using their health insurance to pay for therapy as well as those not using insurance. Some people who have insurance don't want to use it for therapy, because they don't want a diagnosis on their medical record. Insurance only covers claims for particular diagnoses, so if you don't really have a DSM diagnosis and are just a healthy person with some difficult things to discuss, this can be a bummer.

I'm an "out-of-network" provider with all health insurance companies, including Medicare. This means that you would pay me at the time of our session ($210) and I'd give you a special receipt you could use to file a claim for insurance reimbursement.

This receipt (called a "superbill") has all the codes insurance needs to process your claim. You download the receipt to their app or website and they mail you a check or deposit to your account. All of my clients are out-of-network, so I know it works!

How much would insurance reimburse you?
That depends upon (1) what % your insurance plan pays when you see someone outside their network and (2) what "allowable amount" they have set for outpatient therapy with a psychologist. (It's called CPT code 90837.)

A rough example: Let's say your insurance policy reimburses you 80% when you see someone outside their network and let's say their allowable amount for therapy with a Licensed Psychologist is $150.
In this example, they'd reimburse you 80% of $150 (= $120) for each therapy session.

If you had already paid $210 for that session, the amount remaining would be $210 - $120 = $90 each time. How does that compare with how much you'd pay if you saw someone on your insurance list? After you've met your deductible each year, the insurance co-pay is usually $25-$45 per session. A common co-pay amount is $30, so let's pretend that's your co-pay.

In this example, seeing someone inside your insurance network (after you've paid your deductible) would cost $30. Seeing someone outside the network, like me, would be $90. If you have a Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account, you'd be reimbursed that $90 quite painlessly. If you don't have an HSA or FSA, you'd file an insurance claim.

I hope you'll pursue therapy if you've been considering it, whether with me or a provider on your insurance list. Therapy really is great help to most people.

A note about Medicare:  It is complex! I have chosen not to be a Medicare provider, so it's possible they would have hoops for you to jump to see me or even that they would not cover someone outside Medicare at all. I love seeing older adults and hope it can work, but want to be honest; I don't tangle with Medicare's notorious paperwork.
